Children in most cases imitate how the older members of society express themselves, determining the overall behavior of that society. In every family or society, we have children as the backbone in so far as communication is concerned. This is seen when Meredith threatens the girls that when she gets married they are going to have a rough time, instead of dealing with the issue of making them like and accept her (Meyers et al, 1998). Threatening is a listening block where the instructor or the speaker instead of talking about the issues that are at hand or that they feel uncomfortable about, talk about dangerous things they plan to do if their decisions or suggestions are not considered (Fanning, 1995). This has been used in the parent trap whereby, Nick, the twin father tries to explain to her daughter Annie what is expected from her without realizing the girl she is talking to is Hallie and not Anne.
In the movie, the Parent Trap, different listening blocks have been used including the following threatening, moralizing, lecturing, Ineffective praising, pitying, shaming, interrogating, and denying.
This impedes effective communication because people do not often express their real feelings. First rate family entertainment thanks to a star performance from a very young, very talented Lohan.Listening blocks are things or factors that hinder us from listening to what others are saying. It had me in tears at all the right moments: when the twins meet, when they learn they are sisters, when the parents discover they've switched places, and when the parents inevitably reconcile. This is a wonderful movie, almost too sweet at times. She is so good, I found myself thinking about the actress, not the character, feeling a twinge of sadness that Lindsay was not more like Hallie and Annie. Lovable Lindsay makes not a single false step. If she isn't, this movie falls apart fast. She is bright, perky, adorable, and completely convincing as both Hallie and Annie. But, the star of this picture and the one on whom the story turns is Lohan. Richardson and Quaid are wonderful as the likable parents, still very much in love, even after a decade apart. When the twins meet in camp and discover who they are, the plot is set in motion. The girls grow up never knowing because their parents never said they had an identical twin sibling. Instead of opting for joint custody, each of them opted for sole custody of one of their twin daughters. Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid play divorced parents who more than a decade later are not sure why they divorced. This movie is so sweet it should have a warning label for diabetics.
